kubuntu resolv.conf on Hardy problem

Hi all,
Obviously I am new to this OS and I am having a couple of teething problems. I recently has a Windows start up problem and after reading about Linux I thought it was time for a change.
First I loaded Ubuntu to have a look at it and then I installed Kubuntu Hardy Heron.
When I started it up I thought it looked good, I went to setup my internet connection and got a message saying my resolv.conf file was missing from /etc/.
No problem I thought, I just found the etc folder in Root and right clicked and went to create a file called resolv.net and I was told I did not have permission to save in the /etc/ folder.
How can this be as I entered the correct user/password at start up.
Any ideas?

What kind of network card and connection type are you using?

Depending on the desktop you are on you have to do one of these:
KDE 3.5.9:
alt+F2>type:

kdesudo kate

kde4.0.5:
I think it is the same but maybe you have to do:

kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate

for kde4.1 beta:

kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate

The navigate to the file you want to edit.

kdesudo lets you open an app. with root permisions.
Kate is a text editor.

Never use sudo for kde or gui apps.

I believe I am using KDE 4 with a dial up connection. I tried all of the above in the terminal but all I got was a pop up saying Command not found!

One last thing (I hope).
I have gone through the setting for my internet dial up but it won't let me put my user name and password in the boxes.

Unfortunately I can't help on the second (dial up) problem.

I haven0't used dial up in 10 years so maybe you should mark this solved (edit firts post) and make a new thread with dial up as the subject.
