    Stupid newbie: wireless questions

Hiya - not new to linux (or Kubuntu) but definitely new to wireless.

I have a broadband connection at home that my desktop plugs into - it's right next to the phone socket so I'm happy to just plug it into the ADSL modem.

But I have a work laptop that I'd like to be able to wirelessly access this connection when I'm at home with it.

What's the best way to do this? Should I buy a wireless router as the modem and plug the desktop in? Can I get a PCI card that will let me wirelessly use the connection? No idea what hardware to but to make this work. No idea how to make it work either, but that's for later.

Second thing - I also have limited space for wiring so I want to get a printer (probably HP all-in-one, cheaper side) that can wirelessly talk to my desktop (and laptop if neccessary). Suggestions welcome!

    Hi,

Yes you can do it, you can for example by a wireless modem-router plug in your desktop computer, buy a wifi printer (I'm not sure it's easy to configure with kubuntu, I've never tried). Maybe your laptop has build-in card, if not buy one with a linux supported chipset (try googling to find the best for kubuntu)
Then it will be quite easy to configure, make your laptop find dhcp address from your routeur, your desktop and printer also, then they will be all connected...

      Hello,

I have a setup similar to what you are thinking of. Acer Aspire 3502 laptop with an onboard wireless Atheros chipset. 2 other systems, main box hard-wired to my linksys router. The native drivers within dapper work for me, did not have to try Ndiswrapper. Took me 3 days to get it up and running but finally managed it, had to relearn a lot of terminal commands along the way..............lol

Ok. Laptop has wireless built in.

So.. I can buy a PCI wireless card and (once configured) this should enable me to keep my Desktop's hardline adsl connection and to use the laptop wirelessly?

And the printer - I've seen these wireless do-da things that you can plug into the printer's "out" port which will wirelessly connect to the PC. Any good? Any experience? Or should I just stump up the cash for a wireless enabled printer?

And THANK YOU for your replies!

          Re: Stupid newbie: wireless questions

          Hello,

research the wireless card in your laptop to get the make and model so to speak, then search the forums and see how successful people have been with that particular onboard wireless chipset., If that does not look promising then research a good nix card and buy it for the laptop. For a router linksys has worked well for me on 4 or 5 nix distors now, sorry, do not have experience with wireless for the printer, that may be a bit of a challenge...........
