Installing windows to a second hard drive

I dumped windows a while back when I decided in a moment of spontaneity to switch to kubuntu completely. I've since come to realize that while I do in fact like kubuntu much better than windows, I do need windows for some things. I'm looking for a simple, straightforward way to install windows to a second hard drive. I'm comfortable enough with linux to be able to accomplish this with a simple tutorial, however, I've not been able to find a single tutorial online that a) doesn't deal with installing windows/linux on the same drive, and b) doesn't include installing windows first. Anyone know where to find a tutorial, or could post one here? Thanks!

just install your windoze on your other drive.

as you know, windoze is not kind to other installed operating systems.
windoze assumes exclusive control and will overwrite the boot loader.
this is why all tutorials suggest to install windoze before linux.
because linux's boot loader detects and (democratically) configures a boot entry for windoze.

so...
keep a linux live cd or the super grub disk at hand
for fixing your grub later.

just out of curiosity...
since i don't know anything about windoze...
what is it that you need windoze for?

If you have 1gig+ RAM I would suggest using vmware or virtual box for an win xp vm guest system.
That way you don't have to reboot or edit grub settings. Just start windows from within linux whenever you need it.

I use my win xp vm guest system for photoshop c3, flash c3 and dreamweaver c3 and they run perfectly stable and fast.

Edit: I would be curious what you need windows for as well

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but I attempted to install a virtual XP - everything hunky dory, but I cannot get full resolution (it remains a window on my screen). Is there a trick to fill the whole monitor?

If so, I wholeheartedly agree with Fintan - I've got 1GB RAM and an AMD 2600+ (5 year+ old system) and things are running very smoothly!

Anyway, I am wondering how our friend tailenklaive is getting along. I've since installed all my ancient windows games (half of which don't work under XP) and can't wait to give them a whirl again 8)

FYI, I recently installed the free VMware Player ver. 2.04 on my Kubuntu 8.04 system, and it's never run my Win XP VM better. Moreover, I discovered the free VMware tools download (Fintan may know about it already). The tools include a video driver for the Win XP system, that really improves the mouse behavior and the appearance of things, including letting you go from Win XP to Linux without doing Ctrl-Alt like you used to have to. I would venture to guess that older Windows games that are not pushing the video to the extreme edge would probably run OK on this VM.

I hadn't even though about using vmware...basically, I need a copy of windows installed for some video editing software, mainly Avid, which runs under windows. There are other things too, photoshop, dreamweaver, after effects, and games which I can't get working reliably under wine.

I'm running an AMD 4200 X2 processor with 2Gb of ram on two Seagate barracuda SATA2 drives with an Nvidia 7800GTX video card. Do you think this would run windows under virtualization reliably and stable enough to play games and other things?

That should work just fine.

If you're running the 64-bit Linux architecture, make sure you choose the 64-bit VMware Player tarball. You'll have to fill out their little questionnaire (I always give my real name and email and tell them its for home/non-professional use) and then you get to the download page. Get ver. 2.0.4 of the 64-bit (or 32-bit) tarball and also get the tools/drivers -- I forget whether the tools are on the exact same page or not -- I think maybe they are from a different web site -- I'll find it.

Save the tarball in a safe place for future re-use, before you unarchive a copy of it for your actual installation.

Also, know that if you have trouble during the installation and configuration, it's not unusual to need the any-any-update patch file, which I can point you to or send you. As I recall, I didn't need it to install on my 8.04 system.
