    Screen Res

When installing Kubuntu (5.10 Breezy Badger (Love that))
I selected all the Resouloutions so i coudl upgrade my monitor later <D'oh!>

I need to edit xorg.conf but have no screen to do it <D'oh>

I have seen some other posts but i cant get on with VI (No offence) is there another (command Line) method of editing the file?

Or should i use the Live DVD and mount the correct partition and use Kate? if so how do i mount the disk i got some error based in inexperiance!

If i get as far as editing xorg.conf can I just delte the big resoltion's or even better re-set the default to 1024x768 (For a 15" TFT)

Thanks for your help and i can always reinstall if any of this dont work! but then i won't have learned anything!

        Re: Screen Res

Re. Your perms problem: You have to precede the editing instruction w/ sudo or kdesu depending on whether you're using a command line editor or a gui editor. When it asks for your password, enter your USER password, (K)Ubuntu doesn't use a root account.

Re. The double post. I'll take care of it.

Re. my curiousity. Are you the Dave McMahon who used to work for AS&E, back in the day? If so, Hi and regards.

okay (back in standard 5.10 boot now)

          Now using nano

i cant login to sudo -s unless i first login to mcmahon, once i logged in as mcmahon i can log in as sudo-s <maybe bug?>

Okay both i type nano /etc/x11/xorg.conf and i get nothing so i use read file (CTRL-R) and type /etc/x11/xorg.conf again no file (says "/etc/x1/xorg.conf"

I have been trying to get alternative O/S's to work (on and off) for years am i jinxed? Or does Bill infect my BIOS's?

Hi i did'nt work for AS&E although i'm tempted to say yes so maybe more people help me I work for Suffolk Computing and we do the basic Windows/Hardware repairs so i bascially spend most of the time Reinstalling windows with more security (always easier than trying to repair an old Windows installation and of course you can take control of that box so you know what's going on with it. I have recently tried Apple OSx (not stable enough <yet>) so am trying Kubuntu.

              Re: Screen Res

The basic way to use sudo is that you login as yourself, then when you want to do something as root, you prefix the command with "sudo". The first time you do that it will ask for your user password. After that it's good for 15 minutes before it asks again. This is a security precaution because a cracker will try to get into a linux system by using the root login, but (K)Ubuntu doesn't have one.

IF you HAD worked for AS&E, you'd get sympathy from everyone eles who worked there

Now posting from Kubuntu! ha ha! okay new probs

I want to set this box up as a salelite around my NAS box ( www.freenas.org ) so that all my pc's can access the NASbox regardless of the O/S so far Apple (shortlived) Windows and Even this Kubuntu box can access via Samba and FTP but....

when i find my .doc (Word 2K3 origin) files i can copy them to home or whereever but i cannot open directly, i want this kubuntu system to be used by my family so that they can jump on any machine and edit the files but when i oper them into Open office writer (V2) it crashes (Via FTP) or writer quits via Samba!! Do i need to fix Kubuntu or Openoffice?

Please start a new thread for this problem, so that people know what it's about. Also, I recall that in the not too distant past (within a couple of weeks, ago) someone else had a problem like this. However, I can't recall whether the problem was Oo.o or Samba. The work around, IIRC, was to copy the file, and then work on it, but there was an actual fix as well. Search the forum for the right thread.
