Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4 Remix

In order of operation:
Downloaded and burned to disk - kubuntu 8.04 kde4 remix
installed through live cd
rebooted and logged in
adept updated
enabled desktop effects(only available in kde4)
then rebooted
came to the login screen and typed in my password
and i got a blank black screen and in the background i heard the welcome sound

Does anybody know whats wrong and what i should do?

I have the same problem now with my kde-nightly install... went into 3.5.9 to turn off desktop effects (by editing kwinrc) but no luck...

[Compositing]
Enabled=false

It did actually do something i think though, since the blank screen is now all white... can still hear the start-up sound... skype logging on, etc...
