    It seems to have worked! I haven't tried installing the converter yet. Will do shortly. Here's the output of the refresh. Why would it have done that? The server went down?

      Servers do go down - they are after all, computers.

      One isn't tied to using one's own Country as the source for package maintenance. If a particular repository location (Country) doesn't/isn't working, select another. Ah, the beauty of Linux. 8)

        Yes. (bad joke coming) And then there's the old joke. Has your computer gone down on you lately? Mine did. The keys hurt like hell. (Sorry, I won't give up my day job.)

        I could have changed the country for the repository through manage packages in adept too, right?

          Yes. (Almost) always more than one way to do something in Linux.

            I'm learning. I'm learning. Now I'm looking for a good backup utility to CDRW and DVDRW. Amanda is WAY too complex for my needs I think. Should I mark this thread solved now?

              That's completely up to you - you started this thread. Just return to your first post and click the Modify button and add SOLVED to the subject line.

              There are plenty of backup utilities you can review and ultimately choose from. Initially, just use Adept Manager and search on backup and review the description. Just click on the blue > to see more of the description. Also, utilize Google - Google is your friend!

                Search around here.
                => Partimage. ?
                Or, => http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3094854.0 ?

                  Offtopic. Got a backup utility/program you'd recommend? Just for a desktop, ideally to CDRW or DVDRW. I tried one and it wouldn't take. CDRW-TAPER. Same error message. And in the listing in Adept when I tried it it showed BREAK and then something else. Which I assumed meant I was about to break a package.

                    Google result on simple kde backup program (first 'hit'):
                    Linuxlinks - Software - Backup

                    Keep in mind that not everything listed (or found) via a web search is necessarily going to be useable in Kubuntu. Read the descriptions. If it sounds promising, open Adept Manager and search on the package. If it's available (read:designed for use in Kubuntu), you can opt to install it (or not) and check it out. You can always uninstall if you decide you don't like it.

                    Until you are comfortable, please utilize Adept Manager to install packages. Don't be tempted to download something you found on the 'Net thinking it will work. When in doubt, post a question in the Forum and let others who have more experience 'guide' you.

                      An easy program to use to create a playable DVD from any file which mplayer can play, is DeVeDe. It's in the repositories. What it does, is create an iso from the video file, that you can then use in K3B to create a DVD. It has never failed to work for me. The only problem I have with it, is that it takes it a long time to create the iso, and during that time, it is extremely processor intensive, and during the time I'm running it, I have to take the side cover off my computer and point a desk fan at it to keep the proccessor temp down.

                        What, you never thought of just putting the PC into the freezer (just have to add a keyboard extension).

                          When I build my next computer, I'm thinking of getting one of those small refrigerators you see in offices and using that for my case.

                            Thanks. I'll check them out. But right now I'm getting that error message again for some reason. And I'm all putah'd out. So we'll come back to it fresh. I'll take your advice!

                              Thanks. I'll check it out. I installed QDVDAuthor but am not having a lot of luck with it.
