Avidemux is another option, with an "auto VCD" function that will let you create a VCD-compatible MPEG to burn with K3B.

Avidemux is in the repositories. Avidemux > Auto > VCD/SVCD/DVD/PSP

Thank you. When I try to install Avidemux I get the following error message. In fact I've been getting this error message all day. How can I tell whether it will break a package or I can't download the package? If it's the latter, I would think it must have something to do with the server I'm trying to access. If it's the former I'd really like to know what packages are getting in the way.

There was an error committing changes. There was possibly a problem downloading some packages, or else the commit would break packages.

Shouldn't be the case, but open Adept Manager > Adept > Manage Repositories > Third-Party Software and ensure that the cdrom repository is un-checked.

Wow. Thank you. In doing that I discovered EVERYTHING was unchecked. No wonder Adept wasn't working! I'll NOW know to check that that IS ok the next time I get that error message. Thanks for being so helpful.

Everything was unchecked, in both tabs: Kubuntu Software and Third-Party Software Wow. That isn't normal, and would of course explain the problem. :P

Unless you intend to download source files for compilation, you don't need to activate (check) the Source Code repository on the Kubuntu Software tab.

Unless you intend to download source files for compilation, you don't need to activate (check) the Source Code repository on the Kubuntu Software tab.

That a server is down is always a possibility. Let's look at your sources.list file. Open a console and type:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Copy and paste the output into your reply.

I suspect something else is wrong. I just tried to install simplebackup because I'd had a lot of trouble coping with Keep which is installed with Kubuntu and it gave me the same error message. The file looks okay. Ensure that you have closed Adept Manager, then from the console, type the following:

sudo apt-get update

This will update the package cache for Adept. Let me know if you get any reported errors. (This doesn't download/install anything).

Well there was this response. Looked fine to begin with and then there was a pile of error messages at the end. I didn't go ahead and try to install anything. I'm going to take the Windoze approach and reboot system. I hope you're not getting as frustrated as I am. <grin>

Just checked on one of the URLs used in your sources.list file, and it isn't 'good' (404 Not Found The requested URL /ubuntu was not found on this server.)

I tried the same URL, but for the United States, and it resolved correctly. So, you can do the following. Open Konqueror. Navigate to /etc/apt and right-click on sources.list and select Actions > Edit as Root

Replace each occurrence of http://ca with http://us
Save/close the file.

Open a console and type:

sudo apt-get update

to again refresh the package cache.

Retry installing avidemux again and let me know how it goes.
