i recommend smplayer for video. second choice would be kaffeine.

for audio, i recommend audacious or amarok.

As shown in the YouTube videos, you can use Compiz to enable such desktop effects. Go to K Menu --> System -> Desktop Effects and choose your option.

For multimedia, I use the following apps.

Kaffeine - to watch videos (avi, mov, wmv, etc)
JuK - to listen to music (mp3, ogg, etc)
        K3B - rip/copy CD/DVD
        KAudioCreator - rip music CD

Re: please help me out i'm a beginner

          Hello guys,

I'm a totally new to linux and just installed Kubuntu 7.10 five days ago.
I wonder why Amarok won't play mp3 and Kaffeine won't play any video format.

          I've already installed kubuntu-restricted-extras_10_i386
          but still doesn't work

Last night I could managed to install wine and run "mp3 player for windows", but that doesn't seems right

Would anyone help me, ... please

The first time you try to play an mp3 in amarok it should prompt you to install the codecs and then should work from then on. What happens currently when you try to play an mp3 in amarok?

Re: please help me out i'm a beginner

Yes, the first time I tried to play mp3 in amarok, it says that amarok needs to install mp3 support. When I click the 'ok' button, there was progess bar and it looks like amarok was automatically installing something.

The problem is I don't have any internet connection since I haven't get Kubuntu to recognize my phone. I'm not quite sure that amarok was installing something.

So I see, I guess that I need to install codecs to make it work.

Would you suggest any codec packages that I can download and install.

              Thank you

Currently I'm downloading libxine1_1.1.7-1ubuntu1_i386.deb and amarok-xine_1.4.7-0ubuntu3_i386.deb, is it the right pacakge?

                  kubuntu-restricted-extras, Commonly used restricted packages
This package depends on some commonly used packages in the Kubuntu
                  multiverse repository.

Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding,
Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, DVD playback, and LAME (to create
                  compressed audio files).

Please note that packages from multiverse are restricted by copyright
or legal issues in some countries. See
                  http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/licensing
                  for more information.
                  => Package recommends (installs): flashplugin-nonfree, sun-java6-plugin, libxine1-ffmpeg, libdvdread3, libk3b2-mp3, liblame0, unrar, libtunepimp5-mp3

I think, that mp3 support is through liblame0:
This package contains the dynamic libraries, which provides the encoding
                  functionality of lame.
