Should I give up on Kubuntu ... and the internet

    KUBUNTU 8.04 with KDE 3.5

I am using wvdial to connect to the net with a 56K external serial modem.

The modem connects, but webpages will NOT load on browser.

    I used telnet ( Telnet google.it 80 ) and it says I have a connection.

The problem seems to be a "defaultroute" problem, which I CANNOT SOLVE ON MY OWN !

Default Route problems are quite common in kubuntu, and quite hard to
resolve, judging by what I have read online so far.

Can someone - please - help me with this?

I had the same problem. I had to contact my ISP and get the DNS addresses and list them. Also, if you are connected to a local network at the same time, it may cause a problem as it does for me. Mine tries to connect to the internet through the wireless instead of the modem if the wireless is enabled. Check to see if one of those would be the problem. Also, KDE has kppp, a handy dialup tool, which uses pppd. It's a good bit easier than configuring wvdial.

Do you have your ISP's DNS servers added in your Network Settings?

K Menu > System Settings > Network Settings > Network Connections > Domain Name System

If this tab shows no entries, you need to add them by clicking on the Administrator button. Your ISP can provide you with their Domain Name Server IP addresses.
