If you're looking for the OS version, at the konsole type:
cat /etc/issue
If you want info on the kernel you're running type:
uname -a -

Another way is:-
lsb_release -a
On mine, it tells me
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04
Codename: hardy
