No Sound

I installed Kubuntu and it was playing sounds well. Then I clicked on an mp3 file following which codecs were automatically downloaded and installed to support mp3 playback. Now I cud play n listen to all my mp3 files. But wen I restarted the system no sounds can be heard ie the files play but i cant hear any sound. Further even the system sounds ie mouse click notifications etc. are also not audible. Plz help me.

you check the mixer settings? like in kmix it might seem like that one slider controls all the sound, but really once you click the little speaker icon and you see the slider, you can click the big word that says mixer and it'll bring up more sliders. The most important one besides Master is the slider marked PCM. If that one's at zero you won't hear anything even if the master volume is turned up all the way.
