connecting to my other computer

How do I connect to my desktop? I have a Dell 600 m with a intel adapter. I can access the other computer using windows but since am newbie (and finding linux difficult to deal with) can not seem to find out how to do it. For one, the 'help' that came with the download for 8.04 does not work.
