    Mozilla Thunderbird woes

I've been using Kubuntu Hardy with KDE 3.5 for the past 3 three weeks and although I am impressed with many aspects of this OS, for the most part I remain deeply frustrated with it.

Can anybody recommend any fixes or advice with regard to any of the following?

I chose to use Mozilla Thunderbird as my e-mail client because I am familiar with it on my PC. The structure of the program is, as expected exactly the same here on Linux as the PC, however there seems to be a shortfall. Hyperlinks, whether to web URLs or e-mail addresses do not work. This means that one has to cut and paste all links into a browser or new message window rather than simply click on the links.
It doesn't stop there. I believe the same problem also lies behind the fact that selecting 'help' from the Help menu, again produces no result, when it should activate a browser window and take the user to the Mozilla website help pages. It is self defeating.
Similarly the hyperlink connection from the Add-ons window, also fails to stimulate a browser window taking me to the Mozilla add-ons pages.

    I'm just perplexed.

    Thunderbird Hyperlinks

A Google of "ubuntu thunderbird hyperlink" produces, top of the list, Bug #192513 in thunderbird (Ubuntu): “Unable to open hyperlinks in ...

    An answer says:

    "Two things:

Install "thunderbird-gnome-support" and see if that helps the situation. Even if you are running Kubuntu, it has been reported to fix this problem before (from bug 173271).

If that doesn't change anything, try the suggestion here:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...22&postcount=7

    That is from bug 146944."

Installing thunderbird-gnome-support worked for the questioner.

      Qoute from link above:

      you can try on thunderdird:
      Edit->Preferences
      then go:
      Advanced->General

Click on 'Config Editor' and on editor check for a key:
      network.protocol-handler.app.http
(you can make it if it doesn't exist) double click on it and set it to full path of the browser you want to use
(in my case, as an example, i use swiftweasel, so it have: /usr/local/swiftweasel32/swiftweasel)
you should also add these lines:
      network.protocol-handler.app.ftp
      network.protocol-handler.app.https

On the other hand you can try out spicebird beta.
I hve been using it for a good 3 months and am impressed.
It also asks which browser you want to use at setup
it is beta and a few things are missing but mostly it os a very good mail/calander/contacts app based on thunderbird

        Re: Mozilla Thunderbird woes

Funnily enough I was looking through the Config editor in Thunderbird when your reply popped up. Cheers this does the trick. Last week I added a similar string to Firefox's about:config so that it would activate Thunderbird from mailto links. That was also suggested to me by a user here.

I did need to get the name of the desired application correct as it is in the Default App system setting.

Now I just heard the system bell go and I've just noticed Thunderbird has frozen once again.

        Thanks again

          Re: Mozilla Thunderbird woes

If all else fails, you might uninstall Thunderbird (through K > System > Adept Manager), then re-install it, start over, and hopefully it will work better. If not, that might suggest something else is amiss.

My hyperlinks problem has been solved with the config edits and @m hoping the crashing problem may have been the result of a dodgy theme I had installed. Time will tell.

            Cheers
