No sound on reboot

I have been using kubuntu 8.04 and have been playing sounds/music from the internet/mp3/dvds without problem.

Today when rebooting the machine I find that I am no longer getting any sound. The kmix icon on the taskbar has an X through it and when trying to play a mp3 file in Amarok I get the following error message:

xine was unable to initialise any audio drivers

I would be very grateful for help in fixing this problem

Thank you for the information. Following the instructions at the top of the first link I was able to have sound restored.
