Is there any hope for installing Visual Studios 2005 on Hardy?

After attempting to install the product, I received the error "A trial edition is already installed on this computer. You must uninstall the previous trial before installing another trial edition"
Which indicates to me that the installer thinks there is a trial version already installed and that I'm trying to install a trial version as well...

is it completely hopeless? or is there something I might be missing?

I rarely get things working correctly with Wine, but perhaps that's just my luck. Have you thought of virtualization? VMWare, Virtualbox, Xen, etc, could be a solution for you, instead of Wine.
