how do I set up a wireless lan connection with my (fritz!box) modem? Have just installed KUBUNTU and thrown out windows FOREVER - please give me some advice"for idiots" so that I can get onto the good old WWW again- much appreciated

First, welcome to the Kubuntu Forums. Second, it will be helpful if you provide us more information. What version of Kubuntu are you running? Is your modem internal or external, and if external, how is it connected to your PC?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. As far as I can recall I downloaded Kubuntu 8.04 (KDE 4 Remix). I have an external modem which is connected to my mac using an ethernet cable and I had intended to connect my Dell laptop (with the newly installed Kubuntu) using wireless LAN -that is where my problem lies - I just don't know how to start setting up a new wlan with Kabuntu. That is where you come into the game ... thanks - appreciate it

You may find that using the Remix version of Kubuntu 8.04, which uses KDE 4, challenging. If you are wanting to setup wireless networking on your Dell, you won't be using a modem, but rather, a wireless ethernet controller. Is your wireless controller built-in to the Dell?

I presume it is all built in. I had WLAN running perfectly on windows before I changed over to KUBUNTU.

Open a console and type:

lspci | grep Ethernet

Copy and paste the output. This will show us what Ethernet controller your Dell is using.

I'm a newbie too, but this worked for my wireless:

Go to kmenu -> System -> Adept manager. Type in your password.

Type "ndiswrapper" in the search box.

right-click on the files that come up, and choose "Request Install"

Restart the machine. See if you can get online.

It won't hurt, and it might help. Ndiswrapper allows kubuntu to use a generic wlan driver, as far as I can tell. It even saw my ancient wireless-b PCI card after I ran Ndiswrapper

I must be too stupid for all of this. I typed in lspci | grep Ethernet and all I get as a reply is:
bash: Ispci: command not found.
Took me absolutely ages to find the "PIPE" symbol on my German keyboard and I was pretty disappointed with the results... any suggestions?

The command is (in lower case) LSPCI, not ISPCI. The easiest way is to simply copy the command I posted below and paste it into your console.

better late than never ... finally got it right. Answer to ispci/grep Ethernet is: 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM57 02X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02). I can`t copy and paste anything until I get online again ... what a pain

Here is what I do for the proverbial copy/paste senerio - - USB Key

I'm kinda new too, so here is what I do.

In the KDE menus - find Konsole. It will allow you to copy paste like in the Windows world.

Create a text file on your desktop, Copy from Konsole, and then past into text file, USB key it to a terminal online.

There are ways to do it in command line, but for folks moving from Windows to Linux, this works as a starter method.

Now - - ndiswrapper is a way to run Windows drivers in a linux box. May not be the way to go if, but it's an option along with the correct drivers.

Question. Is this dell a laptop?

Hi there, Sorry for imposing but while we are on the subject. My ACER TravelMate 2310 Laptop also has a "build in" Wireless and Bluetooth. Both worked in Widoze. Since I went to Kubuntu 7.10 nothing??

Currently I connect via Ethernet ADSL Router

When I console "lspci | grep Ethernet" I get this "00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS900 PCI Fast Ethernet (rev 91)".

Is there any way I can get the wireless and bluetooth going again?
