Dolphin error

Unable to save bookmarks in /home/david/.kde/share/apps/d3lphin/bookmarks.xml. Reported error was: Permission denied. This error message will only be shown once. The cause of the error needs to be fixed as quickly as possible, which is most likely a full hard drive.

The .xml file here is owned by root and my user id doesn't have write permission. Should this be the case?? How would it get changed?

The hard drive is only 20% full.

What version of *ubuntu are you running? Using Dolphin as a file manager "as root" creates ownership problems in a users /home directory.

I should put my info in my sig, but just haven't remembered.

As you were replying I was going to add a question about using Dolphin as root causing this problem.

I imagine that's what happened... I did a chown and everythings fine again..

Excellent. Yes, running Dolphin as root is a no-no in Gutsy. I think they fixed it in Hardy. Running chown on the affected file is the right solution.

However, to the best of my knowledge, I didn't run Dolphin as root. Well, not intentionally any way. I never ever sign on to the system as root as I simply use sudo in command line mode. Do you know of a way that I could've accidentally run Dolphin as root?

this is a known "issue". it has been talked about more than once on this forum.
but it is simple enough to correct, just reset/reassign the permissions to user.

i did, however, get this error after running dolphin as root when gutsy was new.

this is why you should use kdesu instead of sudo, the problem is that, for me atleast, kdesu seems to not work on some things in hardy...

I'm probably confused about when to use sudo and when to use kdesu. I would think that as long as I'm working from the command line that I should use sudo. Wouldn't something like using kdesu to run Dolphin cause a problem like this?

As far as I know, anytime you use a GUI application you should use kdesu. Just for this reason...If you use sudo, you run the risk of any file operations changing the permissions...

So, I only use sudo for no-GUI stuff. I'm sure someone with more experience can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that this is correct...

I think one of the devs got a fancy idea.

Try Alt-F2 "kdesudo dolphin" and see what happens.

nope, still get command not found...I'm guessing it has something to do with paths, but I'm still very much a Linux noob!
