    Double-clicking desktop in KDE 4

I was thinking about installing Linux onto my HP desktop (which now has XP). I thought KDE 4 looked nice, so I downloaded the new Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4 iso and burned it, and I installed it both as a virtual machine on a Mac and using the Wubi installer as a bootable file stored on the main hard drive.

My main concern is why can't I double click files and folders I put on the desktop to open them, and why can't I right-click them to, say, copy them? Is this a temporary bug?

I also had other concerns... like on the one where I installed it in Wubi I wasn't able to get an internet connection (though I was able to connect to network computers). I think I need to manually change the TCP/IP settings for the internet to work with my modem/router setup, but I haven't seen any way to change this (it just says that my ip is 0.0.0.0). Other things too: like I opened the date/time options and it said I needed to authorize myself to change the settings, but there was no Authorize button.

I could use Gnome, but that looks so ugly. Is there a way to install the Oxygen theme on Ubuntu with Gnome?

OK - - Welcome to Kubuntu, now lets see if we can get this squared away a bit.

"""My main concern is why can't I double click files and folders I put on the desktop to open them, and why can't I right-click them to, say, copy them? Is this a temporary bug?""""

By saying double click, doesn't tell me much, so what kinds of files are these on your desktop that wont open??

As for the " right click and copy " comment, kinda sounds like a mouse configuration problem. There are some settings within the 'systems Setting - keyboard and Mouse' that might help, but I don't see a button configuration (in all the years of running Linux, I never had a problem)

""""I also had other concerns... like on the one where I installed it in Wubi I wasn't able to get an internet connection (though I was able to connect to network computers). Again, you can usually accomplish these in the 'Systems Settings - Network Settings' area. You can also do a lot of this in the command line and editing the config files if needed. Search the forums - there is a lew of info.

"""like I opened the date/time options and it said I needed to authorize myself to change the settings, but there was no Authorize button."""

Also found in 'Systems settings - Date and Time'
As for the authorization. look at the bottom of the screen for "Administrator Mode" this will require an administrator password. If you are the first and only user on this installation, I'm betting it's your login password.

      Thanks.

About double-clicking files on the desktop, I mean regular program shortcuts or folders or pictures that I put there. Double clicking and right-click menus show up fine when I view them in the Dolphin file viewer, so it's not a mouse problem.

In the network settings, there are only options for changing timeout values, but nothing about tcp/ip. I also tried doing stuff in the command line, but nothing changed my IP from 0.0.0.0. Would this not be a problem if I do a real partitioned install?

I still see no authorization button.

Oh - - - Guess I misunderstood how you had Kubuntu installed. Being that it's more like a 'live CD' setup, can't say what may be happening with the IP addresses.

The concept of the Desktop is different in KDE4. It isn't seen as a "Directory". so such files won't behave as you are use to. As for Double Clicking, you should be able to go to System Settings --> Keyboard and Mouse. Click on the word mouse on the left. The screen that appears to the right should have an entry that reads "Double-Clcik...". Choose that. You should have double click feature after that. Hope this helps.
