Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

Ok, after a nights sleep I now have swiftfox in the internet menu. So all is sorted there. Just need a reboot it seems.
I think I installed a beta version because it opened to this page
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minefield/ But that's ok. If I run into troubles I'll try find an older version. The few little differences I see so far look pretty good.

As far as the crashing/freezing problems go I am about to find out if they are fixed. We'll see how I go today.

    Thanks again nowshining.

beta yeah it says BETA, go here: http://getswiftfox.com/br18.htm

there is a 2.0.0.13pre2 versions of swiftfox - remove the beta one first fully then install this one. if you go into the forums there at the swiftfox site you should find a link for 2.0.0.12. I'm using 2.0.0.13pre2 since I don't want to touch the Beta version ver. 3.x of firefox or anything as it screws a lot of extensions over right now. :P.

      oh!, and your welcome.

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

Yeah I don't use any extensions really. Well none that I am aware of... ha ha. That was a pretty stoopid comment there, I got a whole page telling me I installed a beta... Kinda self explanitory really.... oh dear.

It is seeming to run a fair bit quicker too. I like it. One question though, is there any way to get Kmail to open links from emails in swiftfox as oppossed to Konquerer? I am still in 2 minds as to whether I will stick with kontact or switch back to thunderbird yet.

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

if you don't like konqueros - you can again remove it without any problems.

          and hmmm,

Sytems Settings - Default Applications - Web Browser

mark http & https urls and in the input box input swiftfox

also to edit your menus - open up the run command and input kmenuedit.

Also you can arrange your taskbar the way you want it. http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nowshining for some info. about me & a current screenshot of my set-up.

Also for more settings - open up a run command box input kcontrol and of course press ok. The search box in system settings & kcontrol allow you to search for specific settings, altho in system settings it will highlight where it is in. .., etc..

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

thank u - i just went into kcontrol messing with some things, saw a themes setting that wasn't there before, and pressed redmond and apply it made it all microsoft 95 like - and moved the taskbar to the right side, and after that the problems with the theme I were having went away- I had problems where many things just weren't right. it fixed that - so I had to go in and fix the things I did have and change the color back to win200 & fonts to lucida bright 8 and lucidia console for the console sized 8.

Also put the buttons the way I had it, but I also saw an option in there to remove the side image, as this is all new for 3.5.9 of KDE. So I removed it. so everything is almos the same as in the picture. ...

edit: oh! the problems I had were mostly with the prograss bar being all brown. , and now it's blue like it should be., it all started tho when when I updated glib and pango from the main websites - i had to compile and install/make install them.

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

              Cool, thanks for those commands.
It's much easier to find all those settings in the one place, rather than scattered all over the place.

I got it opening in swiftfox too, much better.

What email program do you use? I've always used thunderbird, mainly because I have 3 email accounts I like to keep all seperate and I like the way thunderbird organises it. I've got it set up similar in Kmail, but I'm not sure if I really like it yet, it's not as good as thunderbird in that respect. But I would like to have calenders and notes et all in one like Kontact, so there are pros and cons of both really.

I might get rid of konquerer, I was using it for file browsing, but I've been using dolphin today and I am liking that... Ahh, so many options really!

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

I use kontact, if you use free yahoo email in the US, there is a legal and free way to get and send mail to/from your computer.

Thunderbird on ubuntu gnome had font issues - the fonts were tooo tiny and didn't fit well overall with the system, but seen kontact in kubuntu and have been using it since, also using it since it's been more integrated with kubuntu.

The program tho is called ypops - for ubuntu http://www.geocities.com/t_skariah/ypops/ follow the directions there. It's a bit slow but it works. Ypops main site tho is www.ypopsemail.com

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

No I don't use free emails. I have my own domains and emails to correspond.

Well, Kontact just froze up again and died... hmm.

I had Kontact open , swiftfox open but not doing anything, just with this forum open and I plugged in the ipod and loaded gtkpod. It was all good. Then I loaded k3b, ripped one cd which worked perfectly, but the problem came when I took that cd out and put another in. k3b started doing what it was doing before and hanging on the cddb lookup screen. Then when I tried to maximise Kontact it froze and won't do anything. Hmm.

Also when I opened up dolphin again there was nothing listed under the 'storage media' section.

Might do some more googling. Could be something to do with k3b maybe, or maybe the way the CD and DVD drives are ejecting...

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

Okay just a quick update to the k3b problem incase anyone else is having the same problem.

I have just ripped 5 albums in a row flawlessy. THe difference this time is that I made a point of ejecting the cd through k3b rather than right clicking on the icon on the desktop or just opening the drawer.

I then set the preference to eject the cd after it is burnt/ripped and it is still working. Hopefully thats the reason it was screwing up.

Edit: About an hour or so later and k3b and gtkpod are both running really well. No dramas there. But Kontact has frozen up again and I haven't even been using it. Just went to maximise that window and it has shat itself. Perhaps a switch back to thunderbird is in order.

Edit again: K3b is playing up again now. Happened just after I noticed Kontact froze up.. hmmm

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

try this - open up a terminal, type k3b or k3 then hit the tab button, when k3b starts up, do what you usually do until it crashes, then copy the output from the terminal and put it up here on the forums.

However a lot of your other problems are solved right? I mean that they went down so only a few apps crash right? which I would assume kontact & k3b now are the only two problems, also you can input open up another terminal and run kontact thru it and also paste the output from the terminal if it crashes.

Re: Kubuntu crashing all over the place...

Heck yeah, all up it is running 100% better.
I think the few problems I am having now are probably only minor ones.

I'm going to try and do some more ripping through k3b and then load gtkpod and put them onto the ipod after I finish rather than doing it all at once. Maybe they are conflicting or something. (backing up my cd collection)

As for Kontact I deleted it. lol. Decided to switch back to thunderbird. I might see if there is a calander to link with it or something, but it's not a huge deal.

If I get a crash again though I will try what you have said. I have a feeling it could be that gtkpod and k3b don't like to run together for me.

Again - Thanks a bunch for all your help.
