SOLVED "sudo: unable to resolve host..."(WAS X server problems on upgrade to HH)

    Hi there,
This is my first forum post anywhere, so be gentle with me! Been using kubuntu for a couple of
years, but never been a command line tinkerer, so I'm effectively pretty much a noob. Anyway, here's my problem, as I see it:

For the past week or so every time I turned on my 7.10 system the boot process went a bit
wonky - it stopped booting at the command line before x had started. I was happy (though was
going to investigate and fix it, I promise!) just to log in from the command line and then startx,
which worked, but I was in single user mode, so couldn't log out from within x to allow my wife
to log in using her account - had to log out of x, change account and startx again. As i say,
awkward, but I lived with it for a week or so.

I (perhaps foolishly) thought that upgrading to 8.04 might fix it. It's made things a lot worse.
At boot, it gets to the same stage (this time flashing instantaneously three or four times as if it is
trying to startx, before returning to command line. Once i've logged startx produces:

    [START]

    hostname: Unknown host
xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "GasstonDesigned:0" in "list" command
xauth: (stdin):1: bad display name "GasstonDesigned:0" in "add" command

I've had a look at the freedesktop.org bugzilla site, but can't see anything similar to my problems
for version 1.4.0.90. So then I went to /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

    /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

(I'll post this as a reply - my message is above the 20000 char limit!)

    and /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

    [ditto]

I've no idea what's going on - I've googled around and found some slightly similar situations, but
found nothing that works. In desperation I tried (from a similar but definitely nvidia driver
related problem - not sure this is the issue in my case)

    sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new && sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

but that returned something along the lines of "could not resolve host GasstonDesigned" (btw, my wife's father is a Gasston,
and he built the desk I'm sitting at, in case you were wondering...)

Anyone out there able to help someone who really shouldn't have tried to upgrade half way through his wife's proof reading of a friends phd?

    help!

    pentium 4 1.7 ghz, 512 mb ram, nvidia GeForce3 Ti200 rev A3

(yes it's old, but it works, normally - but using this knoppix dvd is pretty sluggish!)

thanks for your time in advance.

Re: X server problems - flaky before upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04, now broken

I had this happen to me a few weeks ago. Turned out what had happened was I had the wrong restricted modules package for my kernel. You may have to install the correct restricted modules. Before you install them make sure that you uninstall the old restricted package first then install the new package after that. I don't remember the exact command line to do this so you may want to google that, then just install the new ones for your kernel and that might help.

@Snowhog - have amended it - apologies for that.
@TheFuzz4. Thanks, I'll have a google around that - I sense some command line tomfoolery is in order...

            I'll get back with results.

            thanks again.

Re: "sudo: unable to resolve host..." (WAS X server problems on upgrade to HH)

Okay, as you can see from the change in name of the post,
I can't sudo to get anything done - it returns

"sudo: unable to resolve host GasstonDesigned"

              What the...?

Case closed! I don't know why I didn't try it straight away (doh!), but just booted in to rescue mode and ran the x configuration option. Worked like a dream, and HH looks pretty good from where I'm sitting!

Thanks for everyone's eye-time - I must learn to put in snippets next time I post - sorry about the huge listings!

Thanks for editing. Really makes following a thread easier when it isn't stretched out.

Glad that you got your problem resolved. I know it was a good feeling to have done so on your own. Now, if you'll return to your original post and click the modify button, you can include SOLVED in the subject line.
