Looks like no software available after installing Kubuntu 8.0.4

I'm new Kubuntu so bear with me. I used the beta and had no problem adding software, but the final release has me stumped.

Firefox isn't available. A search for 'kernel' in Adept returns games. Synaptic is grayed out.

    What am I doing wrong?

I guess I should mention I installed the KDE 4 version.

It is strange for Synaptic to be grayed out altogether. I wonder if you have a broken package. Has the computer given any error message? What happens if you connect to the internet, open Konsole TerminalProgram and input:
    sudo apt-get install frozen-bubble
    ? (Frozen-bubble = a game chosen at random)

Have you tried inputting into Konsole:
    sudo apt-get update
    and then
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    ?

I did apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. The result of upgrade was 0 upgraded and 0 installed but I launched Adept again and Synaptic and Firefox was available. I installed these with no problems so it looks like I'm back in business.

      Thanks for the help.
