I'm new to Kubuntu, but have been limping along w/an old version of Ubuntu for quite some time. I am not well-versed in Linux, I've only done a little in Terminal here and there, so I require a little extra hand-holding, I'm afraid. I apologize in advance for my density.
My hardware is as follows:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
Nvidia GeForce 6100 nForce 410
WD 500 GB HDD (brand new)
1.5 GB RAM
Monitor is a Gateway FPD2485W (24" wide screen LCD)
I realize that my inadequate onboard video doesn't do justice to my monitor.
I did not install the 64bit of Kubuntu, nor am I using the KDE 4 Remix (if any of that might be relevant, I've no idea).
I am limited to 800x600 resolution. Monitor & Display settings only detects my monitor as Plug 'n' Play, my graphics card as NVIDIA GeForce 6series, and my driver as nv, and my monitor is not available as any of the Gateway selections. I have tried picking generic LCD panel with my 1920x1200 resolution, but that does not work.
My attempts at adjusting things leaves me with a blank screen and the monitor telling me "Frequency Out of Range", at which point I have to turn the computer off, restart, choose recovery and have it run the fixing of X.
I have a second hard drive with my old Ubuntu 6.06 installation on it, and upon trying to choose it in GRUB, I see a message of "Loading hardware drivers: Failed" flash by and something else fails, and it loads Kubuntu somehow. My monitor DID run under Ubuntu 6.06 LTS at 1920x1200, albeit with an older kernel (2.6.15-28-386). This is a thread of mine about the kernel update breakage, if that is of any use.
Initially I installed while using a USB KVM, and tried plugging the monitor in directly, in case that might have some amazing miraculous results. No dice.
Am I needing to install restricted drivers? Where can I find them, if that is the case? I've done as much fumbling around and unsuccessful searching as I can and have come up short. Perhaps I have to cave in and buy a video card for my duct tape and bailing wire machine, but if making what I have work is at all possible, I'd like to give that a go for now.
