Are you against installing the KDE3 version of System Settings?  It will still allow you to change any of your settings apart from the KDE4 specific things, such as screen resolution.

sudo aptitude install kde-systemsettings

/usr/bin/systemsettings

I don't see any resolution settings in that version of system settings.

Update. I got the login screen to display in 1280x1024 again and with the dual monitors properly set up. (I can move the mouse between the two monitors). However again after I log in the resolution goes immediately to 1024x768 and then my secondary display goes into cloned mode. Is there some personal settings file I have to delete/edit?

Try creating a new user with a new $HOME location, then login to that user and see if the resolution changes. You can do this in "System Settings -> User Management -> 'Administrator Mode...' button -> 'New...' button (in the middle)".

Ok I found all the settings, but since I don't know which files I need to edit I simply renamed the directory and made KDE generate a new one. Of course everything is not without its problems. Apparently sometime within all the restarting KDE it decided to go back to 1024x768. Oh well at least I have both monitors working. I suppose I can live at this resolution.

If nothing else, you may wish to back up your personal data and reinstall. I've had to do that several times in the past and it usually fixes the occasional fluke.
