    help with Kontact required

I am using kubuntu alternate v.7.10 -32 bit and have a simple question. Why won't Kontact alert me to new email automatically??
i can access new email by signing in to my inbox using my password, but surely the whole point of having alerts is to avoid having to check for new mail manually.
Please put me out of my misery. I am desperate to give Windows the heave-ho!

    With Kontact running:

    Settings > Configure Notifications
Click on the Advanced >> button
Check the Show a message in a pop-up window box
Check the Use a passive window that does not interrupt other work

This gives a pop-up notification that mail has arrived. But, if you weren't watching your screen when it popped up, you still wouldn't know that you had new mail. So, in addition to the above:

Check the Mark taskbar entry box

This causes the E-Mail - Kontact running application icon in the panel to become 'highlighted' when new mail has arrived. If you put your mouse over the E-Mail - Kontact it shows you "E-Mail - Kontact Requesting attention"

    Click Apply and OK

    That's it.

If you desire a system tray email notification application, you can install kbiff using Adept Manager and then configure it for your email account. This gives you an 'inbox' type icon in the system tray, that is empty when there is no new unread mail, and has a stamped letter in it when there is new unread email.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

well i've checked the 3 boxes in the email notifications screen. But i am still not getting any notification anywhere on my screen to advise me of new email (regardless of where i hover the mouse pointer)
i am at a loss presently? all i want is some simple notification of a message. i don't care where it is displayed either.
i'll try the second option suggested in the first reply to my question.
