I am not really a newbie, but I have had this issue with the logout usplash here and there since dapper.
If there is any kind error, even a simple one, I get ugly text and sometimes the last portion of the usplash, then it logs out.
Perhaps the purpose it to alert the user of errors, but they aren't on the screen long enough to see it fully anyway, and secondly, if it isn't fatal; who cares what the errors are? I'm logging out. On my laptop three is come ioctl error about a screen, on my desktop, I got rid of the item showing up as an error, and nothing looks like an error anymore, but I still get text, then 1/3 of the logout usplash.
In all events, the computer still shuts down or reboots properly and does not hang.
Laptop is using Gutsy. Desktop is using Hardy. The desktop is usually fixed if there is a kernel update. The laptop has not had a working shutdown usplash since Edgy.
The boot usplash works fine on both machines.
