Dual Boot with XP, Kubuntu installed first.

    Hi there,

I have been trying to set up a dual boot system as follow.
    - One Hard drive with Kubuntu installed.
    - Have been following instructions posted on http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_l...lled_first.htm

When I Boot the Ubuntu machine from the GParted LiveCD none of the Configurations want to work and I am told to use "Forcevideo" command with screensize etc. None of the configurations I try works, thus I can not get to the place where I can select "Resize / move"

Is there another way of doing this or am I missing something?

    Thanks.

It seems to be a Gparted thing, rather than a Kubuntu thing. If you Google "Forcevideo" top of the list is the Gparted Forum e.g. http://gparted-forum.surf4.info/viewtopic.php?pid=4045

You could try the Gparted Forum as well...

Does the GParted CD give you an option to boot to a command line (aka text mode)? If so, you could probably configure a functional screen, for your partitioning purposes, with the following command:

        Code:
        dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
on the first screen, choose "no" to autodetect the graphics, and on the second screen choose "vesa" and then accept defaults until you get to a screen where you can set the screen resolution to something like 1280x1024 or 1024x768 and finish the script. If this works, then when it dumps you back to the command line you enter
        Code:
        startx
and with luck get the GUI screen.

I haven't tried this with GParted -- it's just a generic way to get a GUI on a Linux system when it doesn't like your graphics chip.

Yes there is a command line tried it but does not want to work?

          the prompt = >grub

When I add "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" it says Error 27> Unrecognized command

Oh no --- that's the Grub prompt. You need a Linux prompt.

I think GParted runs on a Linux OS, so maybe try "exit" at the grub prompt, and see if it takes you to a $ or # prompt.

Tried "exit" but gets the same Error 27.

I'm booting the GParted Live CD on my wife's Win-crap box. Let's see what we can learn.

Mehhhhhhhhh -- I was wrong, Grub is the only "OS" present, so "never mind" on the Linux commands.

So, you tried "force VESA" video mode, and that did not work? What video chip does your computer have?

                  Thank you for helping.

From what I could gather i810, the PC is quite old.
When I Force the I810 driver I get the same Error.

On the gparted forum I was told to try an older version and is downloading now, should be done in an hour or so.

I would have expected "force VESA" to work on anything -- I guess you learn something every day!

On a Live CD, I would expect "VGA mode" or "640x480 VGA" to work on that display -- that's an old and very universal video mode.

                    Good luck with it.

Use the Gparted LiveCD version -10 or -09, as version -11 has been reported to have some 'problems.'

                            Hi all,

I downloaded an earlier version of Gparted (0.3.4-0) and all seems fine , I am able to carry on with partioning/resize etc. Thks for all the help.

One last question how do you insert the "registered linux" user picture in the "signature", where do you "register" as a Kubuntu user?

Thks a heap for all the help.

Re: Dual Boot with XP, Kubuntu installed first.

The easiest way is to have your XP installed first, than from Kubuntu live-cd, set new partitions, creating one for root (/), one for your data (/home), and a swap partition. You can set it all within an extended partition, separate from the XP partition also. No need to make it primary since Kubuntu will accept install on the extended partition.

To enable your dual-boot with XP, you will need to choose either Grub or Lilo initializing program to install on MBR.

If you do the opposite, having Kubuntu or other Linux distro installed first, while installing XP it will write over at MBR and you will have to edit mannualy your Grub or Lilo to enable dual-booting. This is usually more complicated for newbies, but there are still solutions available.
