    Installing software

I have downloaded the gedit software. How do I install this in Kubuntu. I have copied the downloaded file on the desktop and created a folder and extracted all the files into this folder as well.

    Your assistance will be appreciated

    Re: Installing software

I assume you mean gedit, the GNOME editor.

To install this you will have to install the base GNOME libraries so it will compile.

However, a much easier route exists. Open a shell, and type

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install gedit
This will install the prebuilt binary for you, along with all files on which it is dependant. However I would urge you to look at kedit (for KDE) or the excellent kate.

I have tried the shell method, but it seems it cannot find the software.

You don't need gedit in Kubuntu - although it can be convient. If you are following instructions that say "gedit" just use the word "kate" instead. If it says "gksudo gedit" change that to "kdesu kate".

Ok I got into the grub file via KATE, now I want to change the grub to start-up with Windows XP for now as I am still learning KUBUNTU.
Which part of the file should I edit to make XP default boot-up?

          Any help please?

Be careful not to take the cited post 'litterally.' 4 most likely won't be your choice. If you will post your /boot/grub/menu.lst we will be able to tell you what to change it to specifically.
