I followed the guides and it shows my printer in localhost:631. Everything seems fine. When I try to print anything, including the test page, it changes to "Printer not connected; will retry in 30 seconds".

Pretty 'sketchy' info here. Please provide answers to the following:
Your *ubuntu version (Edgy, Fiesty, Gutsy, ...)
Your CPU (32-bit or 64-bit)
Make/model of printer
Method of printer connection - LPT or USB

I don't remember all the guide pages I went to, but it included the cups website, brother's website, and open printing website.
Essentially: Install cups. Download the lpr and cupswrapper .deb files from Brother. Install them. Experience ruin.

I fixed it
The problem has something to do with kde print stuff. When I looked at /etc/cups/cupsd.conf it had all kinds of crazy stuff and said at the top it had been created by kdeprint.
So I removed the entire cups directory, found the cupsys .deb file and used dpkg to force a reinstall. had to use --force-all in the options because it kept erroring out.
Anyway, it then worked as expected. So I guess, boo on kdeprint.Comment

Glad to hear you've solved the problem. If you haven't done so yet, you'll save your self a lot of time and grief by starting a log of actions you take while using Kubuntu.
