I'm running Kubuntu 7.10. I've noticed that sometimes programs don't either install properly or simply don't work. They then prove impossible to remove and just continue to create problems. Eventually requiring a complete reinstall of the OS. In the Windows world there are uninstaller programs that'll track a newly installed program so that if you decide to later remove it, every bit of it is removed. Does such a thing exist in Linux? Thanks.

Re: Is there a fail safe when installing a program?
How are you installing programs? If you use Adept Manager or Synaptic (or apt-get in the command line) and install programs from the *buntu repositories, it is a process that is totally controlled by the package manager. The process of removal is also managed -- you should not have a program that is "impossible to remove".
"dpkg" is the Debian Package manager that is in your Kubuntu Linux system. This is the the Linux analogue of the Windows "tracker" that you are referring to. It is synchronized to the repositories and is able to manage dependencies, updates, and upgrades as they become available.

I don't know, I installed programs like Varnish and Automatix through Adept and apt-get and I had nothing but problems with them. Couldn't remove them no matter what I tried. Finally had to reinstall the OS.

Varnish -- yes, that one is in my Hardy Heron repositories. However, if your sources list was already buggered by Automatix, then I can well imagine that you can't do all kinds of things with Adept, including remove Varnish. :P
