    As far as I know, there is no difference in the packages included in either the Desktop or Alternate CD's; the only major difference is that the Desktop CD allows you to boot to a graphical window manager, whereas the Alternate CD runs completely from the command line.

    Which applications are you looking for?

        in terminal, enter
        Code:
        sudo apt-get firefox synaptic
        and enter your password. This will install firefox for you, as well as synaptic, which I believe is what you are referring to. Synaptic is a package manager that is used to install programs (I use adept, which is the default package manager in Kubuntu).

              Alternate
              (from download pages):
              Alternate install CD

              The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Kubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

              * creating pre-configured OEM systems;
              * setting up automated deployments;
              * upgrading from older installations without network access;
              * LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
              * installs on systems with less than about 320MB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably).

              And with the Hardy: Hardy Release Schedule, Plans, Artwork, Release Notes, Screenshots and Upgrading => Release notes: HardyHeron/Beta/Kubuntu

              For the first time ever, you can encrypt your file system (all but the /boot partition) for increased security during the installation of Kubuntu. Simply select the encryption option at the portion of the installation that requires you to setup your hard drive partitions. This option is only available with the Alternate Install CD at this time.

                You can also install kde-core in the alternate-cd. The livecd only comes with the full blown kubuntu-desktop whicih is a bit much for me. I only use about half of the apps that it comes with so kde-core is the base for me.
