    Can't login using graphical shell

I newly installed Kubuntu 8.04 for i386 on VMWare 6 with the virtual machine like so: 128MB ram, 2 processors, IDE HDD (it's really SATA, but couldn't install grub previously in SATA mode), and 2GB disk space.
Each time I try to graphical login, the screen goes black, and it starts the login screen up again. Tried a console login and everything is fine. I did a kdm stop, then a startx, and got a bunch of errors.

expected keysym, got XF86KbdLightOnOff: Line 70 of pc
expected keysym, got XF86KbdBrightnessDown: Line 71 of pc
expected keysym, got XF86KbdBrightnessUp: Line 72 of pc

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
    > Error: bad length in CompatMap
    > Output file "/var/tmp/server-0.xkm" removed
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

And then just the prompt. Can anyone help? Thanks!

You may want to log in again to console and try this:

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

When it asks a question you are unsure about, just choose the default.
Those errors are related to the Keyboard Map.

I just tried it, and the errors are still there, as well as the endless login loop

Two things I'm finding out there is that one person had that problem and it was because /var was full. Don't know your current config and space issues, but worth a look. Also, is it possible for you to post your XORG.CONF file?

I don't know how to empty var or viewing the conf file (and then retyping it here... don't know how to copy/paste in vmware!)

So this is a virtual installation?

Yes this is a VMWare 6 installation. As stated above, I made a 2GB disk for it. I don't know if more can be added later?

Hmmm. It may very well be a space issue. Try these commands in order listed:

                sudo apt-get autoremove
                sudo apt-get clean

                  Kubuntu needs 5GB minimum.

Oh wow I finally logged in, but then I reset the VM to see if I wouldn't have any further problems and got back to the beginning. Probably something else filled up when I successfully logged in. Any other cleaning commands I can use? Or do I have to reinstall everything on 5GB?

You really do have a space issue. That was confirmed. Dibl is correct about the min. There isn't anything further after that. Once you logged in, that space was filled with Home folder information.

If space is not an issue for you, I would make the partition at least 10gig. If you plan on playing with packages, installing new things to try and such, it's really easy to run Kubuntu up to 7gigs.

I'll reinstall everything on 10GB, thanks so much to everyone!
