    Error messages when opening Kate

I have posted below what happens when I issue the following command, in order to edit any file, or even view it using Kate. This is in Konsole. Alt-F2 won't even open Kate, I assume because of the error messages.

Kate opens, and I can edit the files, but every time I do this I get these error messages.

AMD Athlon 32, 1 G Ram, 80G HDD partitioned as /, home, and 17G backup, Kubuntu Gutsy, installed from Live Disk Generic last week, 2.6.22.14 generic.

Me, too. I just ignore the error messages (same as yours).
BTW, for graphical applications like Kate and Konqueror, it is better (safer) to use
    kdesu kate
    instead of sudo kate.
(See psychocats for the technical reason.)
But, even with kdesu, you will get some error messages like those you have.

sounds like your permissions are wrong
it looks like to me your user id is 1000
which is the default user when you installed .
but kde & kate are owned by user 0
I'm no expert . may be check to see your group setting your group should be "user"
then make sure the group "user" has the permissions to use kate, & anything else thats giving you an error message
or some one here will have to tell you what commands to use
