Wireless (Level one WNC-0305USB) works only for few minutes and then stops

    Hello,

It's been long time since I wrote to this forum for help.
I'm using ubuntu and kubuntu for almost a year and it's so great that when I have problem on something I have the best technitians to help me over the net.

Well this time, I changed my ADSL ISP to a new one. They gave me a router that must be used as VOIP as well as ADSL. So I had to install it on other room than mine (with computer). So I had to use wireless or have the new router turned off and use my old router (but this way no one can call me). My room is approximately 10m distance from router. I cannot use ethernet because of the hallway to my room.

Well here is the problem with the wireless.
I bought a USB card LEVEL ONE WNC-0305USB. I asked first but they told me that LEVEL ONE uses ATHEROS chipset and it's working fine with ubuntu.
So as I installed it, it asks me for a WEP code (wich I put it) and everytime I turn on the computer it asks me for a code (I gave once) that can login to the router.
It loggs in, I use Internet for some time and then it stops. Sometimes it shows that it's online but it doesn't work firefox or Azureus torrent. Sometimes it shows that it works to log in to the router and asks me to write the WEP address but it doesn't connect.
I tried also with the WPA but still didn't work.
I put the MAC address of the USB to the router (a guy told me that).

The router is a Greek one called NetFasteR IAD (POTS). A post I found had that the VOIP firmware looks like SMC 7908 VoWBRA.

Do you think that the router has an option not to request the WEP every few minutes?
I'm not familiar with the WiFi. A friend of mine using windows told that every 10-15 minutes he has to reconnect the wireless router.

I was searching to use the ADSL over electricity. An electritian told me that it might be the lift that is near the router and has magnetic waves. Another one told me that might be the electric cords cause it.

Anyways, can anyone help me on that?
How can I make the wireless USB card to work fine?
Since I'm still new on Linux, please when you ask me something, let me know the command I have to input.

    Thanks in advance.

i think the first goal is to check if did not work wireless or the inthernet connection. The statement "firefox did not navigate" is not that usefull. how to check:

your network configuration should be something like:

    <your PC> -----( internal network ) ------ <ADSL ROUTER> -------- ( Internet )

    question 1)
When your firefor dont navigate, you can at least reach your firewall ( for esample.. the internal configuration page of the router? )

if yes then it's not realy a wireless problem, more likelly you have a lot of white noise on your phone line that disturb your connecion.

question 2) ( if its realy a wireless problem )
what do you use to connect your pc ? KnewtowkManager ? wireless assistant ? both of them give you the signal quality ... check ts is good or bad.

Last thing, just in case its a router problem, but non caused by signal quality. Some ADSL routers have a option to disconnect after some time of internet inactivities... are you sure that your router is not simply disconnecting after some time?

    hope it helps. :-)

      question 1)

Well, I don't know if I wrote it correctly above. My english isn't the best in the world. When I start the computer, Internet works fine and I can reach the router page (don't use firewall, unless router does). But when wireless stops working (right now there's no signal and it's like no wireless router present).
So what is the problem? The noise of the line from the DSLAM to my house? But it works fine for couple of minutes and then it stops. As far as I know from my searches, line noise is only for the speed and not if connect or not, right?

      question 2)

I use nm applet 0.6.5 with ubuntu. The signal is 70% when the network is on.

That is something I don't know and I think I asked in the first place. Where do I have to search that? But router must disconect the internet, right? Not the wireless connection. But the time it stops, I have everything running (eg messager, torrent)

Please be more specific..... when your cannot navigate, you can still ping your router?

        if "answer=yes" then
your wireless have not any problem
else ( "answer=no". When i cannot navigate i cant ping or browse the wireless)
then its realy a wireless problem.

        some tests you can make
        1) try to bring your pc ( it's a laptop? ) near the router for a while and check if the problem persist
        2) try to use ehernet cable for pair hours just to be sure chat the router is working well
        3) you have another pc.. or have a friend with a laptop, just to try is ist a generic problem or its just your PC..

        the worst case is:
        wired connection give no problem,
wireless connection stop working even if the pc is 30cm far from the router.
also with others pc's happens the same thing.

At this point i seriously think that this router have some problem, ask your ISP provider to replace it.

Well, the USB device could ping the router when working. When not, didn't ping to the router.

A greek list I participate told me to return back the device and get a PCI card. I did it. Not it works fine without the problem I had. Now the only problem seem to be the signal.

USB had 70% signal and now the PCI has only 40%. Do you have any idea what to do?

It was 30% but I moved my desktop computer higher and I got 40%. I'm not sure what else to do.

If the connection does not hang imho you can leave things as they are, else you have 2 options:

            1) connect ( with cable) your pc to an access point ant put this access point in a position where the signal is stronger.

            2) buy your own router ( dont use the one ISP gave you). THere are several router with more than one antennas. They are designed to give more range and stronger signals.
