    UID question

I just installed Gutsy after Feisty bit the dust. I get the following message:

    albert@ALBERT-desktop:~$ sudo dolphin
    [sudo] password for albert:
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-albert" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
Error: "/tmp/ksocket-albert" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-albert" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

Could someone tell me what to do if anything (Dolphin popped up anyway)?

    Re: UID question

Why not use Konqueror as the default file manager (like I and many others do )

    Open Konqueror
    Settings > Configure Konqueror
    File Associations
    inode (click the + sign)
    directory
    Click Dolphin
    Move down
    so Konqueror is on top

    Happy people use Konqueror!

      btw,
I think that's a known bug and can be fixed, as someone else will indicate; or try a Search here

        Re: UID question

Dolphin in Gutsy just isn't ready for prime time. I remember fixing that problem, kinda-sorta, but Qqmike's suggestion is probably the better way to go.

FYI (and maybe not what you wanted to hear) Dolphin works just great in Hardy Heron and on KDE4.

I kind of like dolphin, mostly because of split screen, but is the UID problem dependent on application or does it have wider ramifications?

            Re: UID question

Well, for starters, Dolphin is a KDE app, and like all KDE apps, if you want to start it in Super User mode, you are supposed to use "kdesu" or "kdesudo", NOT "sudo".

So try it again that way, and see if anything different happens.

Dibl: Same UID error. I just noticed Kong has Split View so I should try to get used to K. as a file manager.

I vaguely recall something about the ~.ICEauthority file. Like maybe you have to remove it. I googled and found ths:

                https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...gs/+bug/148706

                and this:

                http://osdir.com/ml/linux.debian.dev.../msg00049.html

                and this:

                http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ubu...sources-2.html

None of which provide a crisp answer. Try re-starting your X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, log back in, and open Dolphin, first as a user, and if it seems OK, then try "kdesu dolphin" and see if seems to behave.

BTW, do NOT use Dolphin or anything else in your /home/user directory when running in Super User mode -- that's a good way to really screw things up.

Linux, like good Tuna, should be 'Dolphin free.'

Those errors aren't really "errors", they're just saying that your user ID owned those files (not root) while dolphin expected the user running dolphin (root) to be the owner. Since root has authority to them, there should be zero impact.
