Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

Thanks, that seems like the easier solution. I'll get back to you with the progress.

And to both of you, thanks a lot for putting up with me. I appreciate it!

Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

I wanted to add something after re-reading some of your posts. Mostly for clarification to prevent further issues later.

The program 'konsole' is the KDE terminal program. Starting 'konsole' is the same as starting a terminal in traditional linux terminology.

      NAME
Konsole - X terminal emulator for KDE.

      SYNOPSIS
            Konsole [Qt-options] [KDE-options] [options] [args]

      DESCRIPTION
Konsole  is  an X terminal emulation which provides a command-line interface (CLI) while using the graphical K Desktop Environment. Konsole helps to better organize
user’s desktop by containing multiple sessions in a single window (a less cluttered desktop).
I use the Run Dialog box for starting 'konsole' to completely bypass the normal menu which might be different from computer to computer.

Here is a pic of the Run Dialog box. Which can be started with 'Alt-F2'.

      [img width=400 height=146]http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/WindowsLiveWriter/UsingtheKubuntuRunCommandDialogAltF2_143A2/krun.png[/img]

To start konsole, enter 'konsole' in the text entry portion and click 'Run' or press <Enter>.
This will launch the program konsole. It can also be used for other programs as well. Heck it can even do math!

I hope this clears some things up.

It did clear some things up. I felt inept but I guess it was about the same learning when I first learned how to manage windows.

Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

I do appreciate your patience here as well. As far as windows is concerned what you said is true. Windows is not significantly easier than kubuntu. And it takes some time to adjust.

I hope you will continue to learn more about how things work here. It has provided me many hours of education on how computers and operating systems function. Much more than I believe I could have ever learned within the windows environment.

Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

Now I hit another problem. I don't even know how to install photorec. I saw a friend of mine install a bunch of programs with just a few clocks on his system a few months back but now it seems I have to download and install in windows-style. What's the easiest way to do this? Any good tutorials out there?

Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

When I open adept it gives me an error message saying that there is another process using the packaging system database. If I click yes to letting adept try to resole it it crashes. If I click no I can't do anything in adept. What to do? Is there anything equivalent to the task manager to see and shut down apps I don't want?

Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

This is a common problem with a simple solution:

                  Alt-F2 > 'konsole' > <Enter>

                  Code:
                  sudo dpkg --configure -a

Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

It did the trick. But the question remains; How do I know which programs are running?

Also, now that I downloaded and installed Testdisk I can't find it. I thought it would appear in the K-menu.

Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

There are two ways to display the running processes:

                      1) Alt-F2 > 'ksysguard' > <Enter>
                      2) Ctrl-Esc

Regarding testdisk. It is a command line program so run it from 'konsole'. You may or may not have to run it with sudo.

Re: Kubunto won't boot after entering the console

PhotoRec couldn't find anything. I'll try to find an alternative method. Now I'm going to start a new thread about my sound driver. You're more than welcome to help me out again when I've figured out how to find out how to identify the sound card.

                        Thanks again guys!
