Accidentally removed most of kde software

    Hi all,

In an attempt to remove kde 4 for simply not using it, I removed pretty much everything on my Kubuntu 7.10.

I don't have Adept, ark, kate, dolphin, etc.

In the meanwhile I got rid of the installation cd because I used online repositories to update.

I am now afraid to log out because I might not be able to log in againg and do not want to lose data

I cannot even backup because I can't open folders as dolphin is gone

this is what I removed as I got back to the tutorial
    dbus-x11 dolphin-kde4 kappfinder-kde4 kde-icons-oxygen kde4libs-bin kdebase-bin-kde4 kdebase-data-kde4 kdebase-kde4 kdebase-runtime kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 kdebase-runtime-data kdebase-runtime-data-common kdebase-workspace kdebase-workspace-bin kdebase-workspace-data kdelibs5 kdelibs5-data kdepasswd-kde4 kfind-kde4 klipper-kde4 konqueror-kde4 konqueror-nsplugins-kde4 konsole-kde4 ksysguard-kde4 kwin-kde4 kwrite-kde4 libcapseo0 libcaptury0 libclucene0 libcurl3 libexiv2-0 libkonq5 libkonq5-templates libopenexr2c2a libphonon4 libplasma1 libpq5 libqimageblitz4 libqt4-qt3support libqt4-sql libraptor1 librasqal0 librdf0 libsoprano4 libsqlite0 libstreamanalyzer0 libstreams0 libstrigiqtdbusclient0 libxcb-shape0 libxcb-shm0 libxcb-xv0 libxcb1 libxine1 systemsettings-kde4
    Please help me

Sadly, you are not the only one. Maybe this helps:

Now I'll try to translate because it's in Italian

I am using the "run command" option from the K menu

and I got back "Impossible to execute the specified command" or any other command I run

            try this way:

            1) ctrl+alt+f1 and you should get a text based console ( ctrl+alt+F7 to go back iin graphic console).

            2) login

            3) aptitude install <what u need to install>

p.s) Im italian too... write errors also in italian language .. i can understand them ( but transtate also for others, in this forum, ok? )

And if you K > System > Konsole ? Do you get small text window ?

If you get konsole - try to insert sudo apt-get command there. Any errors ?

If you don't get konsole - Press Ctrl+Alt+F1, you should get full screen text only interface. Log in and try to insert sudo apt-get command there. Any errors ?. You get back to the graphical interface with Ctrl+Alt+F7.

                ghillan & Rog131

Konsole is gone. I am now trying to switch to ctrl+alt+f1

I am copying down everything I've erased to reinstall manually

I'll be back in a second with results

I reinstalled everything I previously quoted. I am still unable to see any of the deleted software in the k menu

                  Any suggestion?

Re: Accidentally removed most of kde software

                    Try command
                    Code:
                    update-menus
                    man update-menus
update-menus automatically generates menus of installed programs for
window managers and other menu programs.
If that doesn't help: try to rename applications-kmenuedit.menu. It is in the /home/<user>/.config/menus/.

Do you have a command to rename kmenuedit?

I tried update-menu (by the "Run Command" link on kmenu) but got the same error as above...

It still does not allow me to open folders or launch konsole

                        mv - move (rename) files

Have you tried to install Kubuntu desktop (in the virtual konsole: Ctrl+Alt+...)?
                        Code:

Reinstalling kubuntu desktop gave me most of the applications back.

                          But,

I got an error while installing kubuntu-desktop (Translated from Italian)
                          Errors occurred while processing:
                          mintdisk
                          E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code(1)

                          Plus

In my K menu I do not have the System setting Shortcut as it used to be but it is now a cascading contextual menu

                            Update:

Everything crashed while I was logged in. I had the time to quickly backup data.

when I try to log in it just won't allow me. It reloads all over again the initial log in screen

                            I am thinking about reinstalling

                            What do you think?

It depends. Can you log in thru virtual konsole ?

When you are in the graphical log in screen: press Ctrl + Alt + F1. Do you get virtual konsole ?

If you get virtual konsole. Maybe KDE settings are so damaged that KDE can't start ?
