    KDE4 from Adept Manager

Having read so many good things about KDE4 I'm eager to try it out however when I select it from the manager it changes red and says break. I went to the list of elements it needed and selected all of those and still the KDE4 and the LDE4 amusements said break. I went to try and install the rest so that it would just need these two but when I did apply changes it said it would break and cancelled it all.

Is there a different way I should be installing KDE4. I have Kubuntu 7.10.

Also I've tried live disks for both opensuse and fedora with KDE4 and neither could recognise my wireless and connect me to the internet. This is a silly question but is it the underlying operating system that is causing this because I would hate to upgrade my Kubuntu and loose the internet! I feel sure I know the answer to this but I am just being paranoid and would like some reassurance.

    Thanks
    Susan

    Re: KDE4 from Adept Manager

I've found this page http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.2.php and tried to follow the instructions at the bottom, adding this site has caused Apt manager to crash and it won't work at all. I followed the crash's suggestion of trying apt-setup which wasn't recognized and apt-get update which just say's

E: Type ‘http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu’ is not known on line 92 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
    susan@susan-desktop:~$

how do I get rid of this when it won't let me in?

I feel like I am fated not to have KDE4 yet!

    Thanks anyone who is reading

It kinda sounds like there may be some problem with your sources. You didn't use Automatix or anything like that, did you? If you want to post your /etc/apt/sources.list file here, maybe there will be something obvious. So, Alt-F2 "kate /etc/apt/sources.list" with no quote marks, copy it and paste it in your reply.

        Commands:
update - Retrieve new lists of packages
        upgrade - Perform an upgrade
install - Install new packages (pkg is libc6 not libc6.deb)
        remove - Remove packages
purge - Remove and purge packages
        source - Download source archives
        build-dep - Configure build-dependencies for source packages
        dist-upgrade - Distribution upgrade, see apt-get(8)
        dselect-upgrade - Follow dselect selections
clean - Erase downloaded archive files
autoclean - Erase old downloaded archive files
check - Verify that there are no broken dependencies

        Options:
        -h This help text.
-q Loggable output - no progress indicator
-qq No output except for errors
-d Download only - do NOT install or unpack archives
        -s No-act. Perform ordering simulation
-y Assume Yes to all queries and do not prompt
-f Attempt to continue if the integrity check fails
-m Attempt to continue if archives are unlocatable
-u Show a list of upgraded packages as well
-b Build the source package after fetching it
        -V Show verbose version numbers
        -c=? Read this configuration file
-o=? Set an arbitrary configuration option, eg -o dir::cache=/tmp
        See the apt-get(8), sources.list(5) and apt.conf(5) manual
pages for more information and options.

that last line needs to be:

          Code:
          deb [url]http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu[/url] gutsy main
edit the file and take out "http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main" and put that line above in it's place.

In Linux, always more than one way to get a task done. To edit a file 'as root' you can also just open Konqueror and navigate to the files location. In the case here, to /etc/apt and then right-click on the file (sources.list) and select Actions | Edit as Root
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
