    stumbled at first stage

    HI

I have been wanting to try Linux for some time now but have failed at the first hurdle. The download and burning on to CD of Kubunto did not work. When you look at the file it show es this

The icon is different but I think thats because I'm using XP.

This is how the file appears when downloaded so how do I fix this before burning?

Ahh... You burned the ISO image file directly to the CD. The image file is just that, and image of the entire disk. Most CD burning software should be able to burn that correctly. What software did you use? The one I use on a Windows machine is Roxio.

Right -- usually your burning package has a choice to "burn as ISO" or "burn CD image" or something like that, to distinguish it from "data CD" and "audio CD".

        I used Nero 7

I told it it was a data CD?

The thing is the downloaded file showes as the same?

You aren't burning a 'data CD' - that's your problem. You need to select the option of burning a iso image to CD.

                  Read the manual.

Personally, if you are going to use Windoze utilities for burning CDs, I would recommend ImgBurn. It's free and it is very easy to use. It's what I used before I installed Linux on my PC.

You'll have to click around your Nero version. Keep clicking the tabs, buttons, menus.
                    Look for key words like
                    Nero Burning ROM
                    Image
                    ISO Image
                    Burn CD Image
                    Burn Disk Image

and click on CD when it comes time.

(Nero in XP is a lot more complicated that K3b is in Kubuntu.)

These are the oh-so-complicated steps to burn an iso image file in imgBurn:

                        1. Load ImgBurn.
                        2. Switch to 'Write' mode.
                        3. Insert Disc in Burner.
                        4. Select Image to burn.
                        5. Click 'Write' button.

                        Finished!

                        Like I said, very easy.

                            That worked.

I'm off to play with Kubunto
