SERIOUS PROBLEM!- What the heck happened to firefox and pidgin

    Hello all. this ones serious

firefox and pidgin (my instant messaging service) too a crap. like literally i was running both, they died and wont re open.

of course i restarted. kdm wouldnt start. i fixed that and everythings fine exept firefox and pidgin wont start. i tried reinstalling firefox but it's no go. here's the error message i get when i run firefox from a terminal
/usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_once_init_enter_impl
    pidgin gets a similar error.

i dont know it this is related, but KNetwork manager shows the little unplugged symbol and when i right click it it says it's not running. I'm using wifi atm and i have an Ethernet card installed but not in use. My Teacher (an avid Linux user) says that it's because one of my network interfaces is unplugged (that doesnt make sense to me, especially since it always showed that it was plugged in before when i was using my wifi)

    EDIT:
FUN FACT- I am using Konqueror as my web browser atm

Not sure if this will work as I can't try it as I am at work at the moment, but might be worth a try as my thought is that you could have a corruption in your configuration.

open a console window and try the following

    sudo apt-get remove firefox

do a ls -a in your home folder and see if you can find your firefox folder (cant remember if it is under .mozilla or just .firefox)

when you have found the folder rename it (you can delete it later if all goes well)

sudo apt-get autoremove (remove all firefox installed files)
sudo apt-get autoclean (remove packages form your system forcing apt-get to re download files)

    sudo apt-get install firefox

Try running firefox, if this works replicate this for pidgin

If this does work you will proberbly have lost your favourites, so you will need to log through the folder you renamed to see if you can find them in there (should be a single html file I think)

Okay have you solved this ?

Try uninstalling firefox and then renaming or removing the firefox directory. I would rename it so I can refer to it later if necessary

      Code:
      sudo mv /usr/lib/firefox /usr/lib/firefoxBad
      Code:
      sudo mv libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0 /usr/lib/Badlibgdk-x11-2.0.so.0
and too make sure nothing is linked
      Code:
      sudo mv /home/your_user/.mozilla/firefox /home/your_user/.mozilla/firefoxbad
Just an idea, with all old wrong associations out of the road installing firefox now should get it going.

this is a reply from the ubuntu forums
Both Firefox and Pidgin are GTK+ based. If you're running KDE probably all the other programs you use are not. Can you run any GTK+ based application?

I wouldn't know how to solve the problem anyway.
i'd like to fix this problem without uninstalling files, as my favorites for firefox and logs for pidgin are EXTREMELY important, and i dont want to risk losing either of them.

Then follow my solution as all files including config are backed up in the process.

                  perhaps this the libgtk2.0-0 package?

You can safely uninstall packages such as pidgin and firefox without loosing your settings/logs/etc as local user configuration settings and data are never removed in this process, unless you go in and manually delete them yourself.

I'm new at helping BUT I had a problem with Kubuntu and Thunderbird that MAYBE the solution provided by Greg Grossmeier when I reported it to Bugzilla may help. He suggested that, although I was using Kubuntu I should install "thunderbird-gnome-support". It solved my problem. Maybe that is the solution for Firefox - installing "firefox-gnome-support". It's a long shot. The other solution is reporting a bug to Bugzilla which I did and the help was immediate and solved the problem
