Browsers...There's gotta' be a better one!

Let me preface this by saying that I've pretty much exclusively used Internet Explorer since it was first released...

*insert witty bashing and name calling here*

Now that that's out of the way...I've never been thrilled with the performance of FireFox in Windows. The program generally takes much longer than IE to open, and there's a number of issues with web-coding designed to work with IE's broken design.

I briefly tried Konqueror...and the first thing I tried to do was log into GMail. I got a KHTML error and I never actually got past login. I said, "I'm in Linux now! I should naturally use FireFox!"

Webpages with a lot of frills work POORLY in FF for me. For example...MySpace or ESPN.com are both TERRIBLY slow to load and once they do, you can't scroll or do anything in what could be considered a timely fashion.

Does anyone have recommendations? I've used Opera in Windows a few years ago...but it was terrible at displaying pages. Everything else i liked. How does that run here in Kubuntu?

You can change Konqueror to be 'seen' as another Browser for individual sites you visit. Tools | Change Browser Identification and/or Settings | Configure Konqueror | Browser Identification

That's pretty handy...but the look/feel of it isn't as important as the way it runs.

That's my gripe. FireFox and Konqueror don't seem to run very well on my machine. But then again, it's an old box with a single-core 1.7ghz AMD processor and 512mb RAM...so what will run well, right?

Here are a couple of useful links for speeding up FF. at least for starters.

        http://www.ubuntugeek.com/speed-up-f...b-browser.html

I have a similar machine and my FF works just fine and on all the pages you mentioned.
It will slow down when you have a lot of video sites open in tabs. That will change in FF3

So, have a look at the version of your flash plugin. Is real play installed?
Which add ons do you use. Some conflict with each other.

Finally, what snowhog meant is that by telling konqueror to "act" like another browser, that is exactly what it does. So it will render some pages like IE because that page thinks it is using IE.

Bottom line is this as long as yahoo and others continue to design for IE only and don't use W3 standards we will have problems.

Cheers and welcome to the party
