Just installed Kubuntu....

    Just installed Kubuntu....

    So, a few weeks ago, I installed Kubuntu while I still had Ubuntu to try it out. Today I decided to do a clean and fresh install of just Kubuntu. I remember when I did it when I was using Ubuntu, there were way more programs and applications and such under the K-menu. In this install, there is barely anything. What do I do? Also, it seems that there are some programs blacked out in the add/remove programs thing. How do I access these programs? Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

    What programs do you want to install? I'm not an expert but I would like to help. If you know exactly what programs you wish to install, just type "sudo apt-get install <name of the program>" in the konsole. Hope this helps...

      For Gutsy Installations:
      Open Adept Manager (K Menu | System | Adept Manger) and click on Adept | Manage Repositories. On the first tab, check all items (you don't need the last item checked unless you intend to download source files for compiling). On the Third-Party Software tab uncheck/delete the cdrom repository entry. Close the window. If Adept doesn't automatically fetch updates, click on Fetch Updates. You will now have access to the thousands of available packages. If you still have problems, open a console and type:
      Code:
      sudo dpkg --configure -a
      Windows no longer obstructs my view.

        Okay so when I downloaded Kubuntu earlier today, I downloaded Gutsy and as adept does its updates, a box comes up and says that I can upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10. I'm starting to think that something is wrong with my live cd.

          You have to disable/delete the cdrom from the repositories. Did you follow my instructions?

            Thanks for your help snowhog. I guess I didn't see the part about deleting the CD repository before. Everything seems to be going much smoother now. I think that another problem I was having was that I was on a slow internet connection last night.

              okay, even when I did all that you told me to do, after Kubuntu finishes downloading the updates, I still get the message that says that there is a new distribution available. I don't understand why though because I dowloaded 7.10.

                I believe this is a bug with 7.10. Just tell it to update and it will stop bugging you. It won't change anything with your install.
