    When this happens, are you still able to use the browser to navigate to other sites? If 'no,' what do you have to do to close the browser? Will it close normally, either from the menu bar or by clicking the X in the right upper corner? Is the rest of your system working when this happens?
    Windows no longer obstructs my view.

        Then it isn't a crash after all, but a 'loss of internet connection' to your ISP. Have you contacted your ISP (Road Runner) and told them that this is happening? Many ISPs have 'inactivity' settings that will drop/disconnect the session if they perceive no activity. If this is the case, a simple way to fix it is to start your email client and set it to check for mail every x minutes, where x is less than the inactivity limit set by your ISP.
