to be root you need to set a root password
        Code:
        sudo passwd
but instead of logging in as root, just use"sudo" before every command you need to be root

I'd be careful doing this. By default, sudo and kdesu are tied to your account at install by associating your account with certain groups. The root password is disabled by default and uses these other mechanisms to control root access. I'd try what Snwohog stated first. Then move on from there if it doesn't let you have access as root.

Read this as well. Clarifies what I'm saying, as I know I probably didn't do to well.

i saw what MoonRise was saying
but when i had kubuntu installed before and then had to reinstall because of a dumb problem i had root enabled and it worked fine so. For right now i am good but is there a way to go back to how i had it because i already enter the password and everything.....and it is all working fine

I know i have to be extremely careful when i am root, but i hardly ever go in there and when i do i know exactly what i am doing.
And i started this thread because i wanted to install screenlets in widget layer which didnt work and i followed these instructions:
                  http://www.ubuntugeek.com/screenlets...ntu-gutsy.html

Can anyone help me with a url to get this working.
All i want is that viista type clock, calendar, etc. bar on the side

                    Re: CANNOT BE ROOT!!!!

many of these things can be accomplished with super karamba. It is available in the repos. There are hundreds of karamba themes available at http://www.kde-look.org.

You shouldn't need anything else installed. Try a few other themes and see if any of them work. Some themes work for some and not for others. Let me know.

Yes, that one needs lm_sensors installed to be able to poll the cpu temps. lm_sensors is available in the repos. You will most likely need to change the theme to point it to the proper location for your temperatures.

knotes is a simple program that will do what I think you need. It should be installed if you have kontact installed.

                            Mike

PS try some simple themes for amarok or something. Just to make sure super karamba is working correctly.
