    Why are you in root?

I'd suggest exiting to the user level and then trying

    kdesu kcontrol

To get administrator level for kontrol.

i picked up that habit while using suse.
is it dangerous to be in root?

It can be, which is why all users aren't root.

When you're root, you can muck things up without realising. That's why sudo is generally a good idea.

Thinking back to my SuSE days... yeah, I normally had at least one root console open...
