    [abandoned]Widescreen support?

    Upgraded to Hardy, issue disappeared

OK, I officially give up. How to set up widescreen monitor?
Automatic setup works as good as random number generator, or so it seems.
No xorg.conf or xorg.conf with Monitor section like one below sort of work, but...

If I select standard resolution, aspect ratio is totally wrong. If I select one of widescreen modes, squares again look like squares, but up to 1/3 of the desktop seems to be "off-monitor", and auto-adjustment function does not fix it,

So, question, - how to get both correct aspect ratio and image size?

      Re: Widescreen support?

      Videocard is builtin Intel (945GCT),
      uname -a
      Code:
      Linux noir-desktop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 02:46:46 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
      Monitor input is Analog.

BTW, 1280x768 looks almost correct, but aspect ratio is still a bit off, - not really noticeable viewing webpages, etc. but not good for image editing I do quite often.

EDIT: I have Samsung's specs sheet it does have pixel clock/sync polarity data for some widescreen modes, two last modelines were bsed on those, but itdid not do any good.

Yes as far as I can tell... Didn't anything serious with xservers in 10 years.
Thanks, some info in those bugreports is really useful. (but I still can't make this thing work as it should )

BTW, although it didn't occur to me search for Intel driver bugs, I did some tracker search of my own yesterday, and even posted some comments to bug that looked most similar to mine.

          https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/161816

In my last comment I attached more Xserver data (pre-manual edit).
I'm also downloading Hardy CD and will post results both here and in the tracker.

I have downloaded Hardy and although I hve no time to throughly test it right now, it seems that there's no that particular problem (still something weird happens during the boot and "Monitor" applet in system settings didn't work.)

Posting this from Hardy Live CD. I still can't get k|System Settings|Monitor and display to work, but as far as I can tell, monitor was detected correctly, and at least max resolution is perfect.

So what's the easiest way to get the same result (minus aforementioned problem) in Gutsy?

Could you possibly post the full contents of your xorg.conf file?

I'm not great with it but from a little bit of experience I could look at where the problem might be.

Do you know what the native resolution of your screen is, you may find this in the manufacturers handbook.

I uploaded all X-related files here:
                  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+b...816/comments/5

(modelines in that xorg.conf are auto-generated, my attempts at xixing them are here.)

Native (that means "opimal", right?) resolution is 1680x1050.
                  current xorg.conf:

                    Re: Widescreen support?

Native resolution does mean optimal resolution.

In your xorg.conf file, edit it as a root user but make sure to back it up before you start

                    Code:
                    sudo kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf
in this section of your xorg.conf file virtual, I find, is more annoying than useful, so if you can just comment it out, also re-arrange the mode orders so that your native resolution is first. If worse comes to the worst remove all other modes and just leave your native resolution in the list.

                    Code:
                    Section "Screen"
                    	Identifier	"Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller"

I'm assuming that your monitor is an LCD so you don't have to worry about the refresh rate other than keeping it at 60 , this is what the @60 means.

Once you have saved the changes to your xorg.conf file press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE together, this will restart your X server and bring you to your login prompt, hopefully this will have resolved your problem, just make sure you didn't have any other programs running before you did it.

                      Thanks for your help.
Unfortunately, it did not do anything, everything same as before, - 1680x1050 is as broken as it used to be.

And please, if you can, break up that long line like I did or delete it, - It really messes up forum layout here.

Have you tried it with just the resolution on its own?

I'm not sure what do you mean, but yes, I first did everything exactly as you said (under current only almost-properly working resolution 1280x768). Resolution did not change after ctrl-alt-bksp, then I selected some other resolutions, incl. native one, - everything is the same as before.

Thanks for breaking up that line.

                            Re: Widescreen support?

                            Sorry,this is what I meant:

                            Code:
                            Section "Screen"
                            	Identifier	"Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller"
                            	Monitor "SyncMaster"
                            	Defaultdepth	24
                            	SubSection "Display"
                            		Depth	24
                            		#Virtual	1920	1200
                            		Modes "1680x1050@60"
                            	EndSubSection
                            EndSection
But I have been doing some searching and this may resolve your issue with some luck

Thanks for all your help, but you'll laugh (or cry) about how it started working.

Gusty has this new "Screens and Graphics" dialogue that I started to play with. It seemed a little shaky as it wasn't remembering settings I put it, but when I rebooted, it implemented them.

I put in that the monitor was a generic 1440x900 LCD monitor using the i810 driver. When I rebooted, it worked and appeared properly. auto915resolution wasn't needed, and sadly, the 'intel' driver didn't work.

I'll post the X.ORG configuration once I'm back on this guy's computer.

                            Thanks once again.
                            http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-551847.html

This is related to ubuntu but the kubuntu equivalent would be in Menu=> System Setings => Monitor & Display => Hardware Tab.

You would have to go into administrator mode to apply changes. It may not work immediately, you may have to restart your computer. If I knew what the xorg.conf file is supposed to look like then I would have posted that instead but I've not found it thus far.

Well, it does _something_, but not really what I need (yet?) Merely installing i815 driver somehow mixed it all up again (1280x768 no longer has close-to-correct aspect ratio...). Trying to switch to that driver did even stranger thing. With 1815 driver the only res that works is 1280x1024, atrociously stretched.

                              xorg.conf with i815:
                              Code:
                              # xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
                              #

                              # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
