.deb packages not installing - please advise!

    Hi,

I've had problems with Kopete crashing when connecting to my MSN account (a known bug) and I downloaded an updated KDE library package (kdelibs4c2a_3.5.8-0ubuntu3_i386.deb) to fix it.

However when I double click on the .deb file and the GDebi package installer runs, it never seems to complete the update. At first it does a bit of disk access, then reports that 'all dependencies satisfied', then prompts for the root password (which I use my own user password - supposedly that is the one to use, since kubuntu has no root account password set up?).

It then continues disk access for a minute or so, with all options in the GDebi window greyed-out. Then the window just disappears and all disk activity ceases. No report of completion - nothing.

The Kopete bug is still there, so I'm assuming that the fix wasn't applied.

    How do I check?

Is there something I'm doing wrong with these .deb files? I've tried installing others with the same result...

I'm about to chuck in the towel, since installing new packages and patches is a real stumbling block and it's really making it difficult to use Kubuntu.

As always, any suggestion would be great!

I'm still on a pretty clean install of Kubuntu 7.10, with only Firefox 2.0.0.12 installed in addition to the 'pre-installed' apps...

    Thanks,

    Mike.

I think others have reported a problem gdebi. Do a search through this forum and or check launchpad (the bug reporting site) and see if a bug has been reported and if so what the status is.

I am sorry can't be of more help.
I hardly ever use gdebi because most of the stuff I need is in the repos.

As for koppete. I have seen a few posts reporting problems.
    I would suggest trying pidgin:

    It is in the repos.

      Hi Fintan,

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out...

So do you recommend using Adept (is that the best/most bozo-proof installer?) to install apps?

In Adept, is it possible to just list installed apps, rather than have to scroll through every app?

I REALLY like the look and feel of the KDE desktop, I'm just finding it somewhat frustrating that it's still a bit tricky to do things that are so simple on my other platform...

      But I'll keep plugging away!

      Cheers,

      Mike.

You may want to try Synaptic, also. To install, open Konsole, sudo aptitude install synaptic. I prefer Synaptic, but thats just what works for /me/.

Is there any way to speed up Adept? I know it's looking at servers for its info, but it's soooo sluggish to switch between categories...

and use Apt/Aptitude/Adept/Synaptic/Whatever to install package from there.

Hmm - i don't use Adept (using Synaptic + apt), but one way to speed things up is comment (the #- mark) sources of from the sources.lst =>
