Should I do it (only one program, K3b is misbehaving in Feisty for me (apparently fixed in Gutsy)) and I can work around it. Anything I should beware of, eg, backups, etc.

I always upgrade. I've been using Kubuntu since Dapper, and every upgrade so far has been better: faster, more stable and compatible, nicer looking, etc.
What I would recommend is just attempting the upgrade, and see if it works. If you get any errors that prevent you from upgrading, then back up everything and do a clean install. I've never heard of an upgrade hosing anybody's data.
