    X isn't starting

Well, I'm a complete newbie with linux. I tried to install kubuntu and it didnt work. I went to my friend who is pretty good with linux and he told me to try all these different things but none of them worked. We think the problem is X isn't starting. Someone please help me!

Hmmmm. OK, did you search here and Ubuntu forum on your computer model? It may be a "boot options" problem -- some of the power-saving features can be a problem and you might have to turn some of them off to boot.

Ok, well I built my own computer so I cant search but I will check my BIOS power saving settings.

Well I found a ACPI, and my friend was telling me about a "noapic" setting for installing. But it still hasn't worked.

Did the Live CD boot to a GUI desktop?

No it just sat there with a black screen until I turned it off.

It might help to take the Live CD, and boot it, and when the first screen comes up (assuming a screen DOES come up) press F6 for boot options. Try "noapic" and "nolapic" for starters, and add "VESA" if that is needed. Play around with options and see if you can find one that will let the CD boot to a GUI for you.

Yeah I'm snipers friend I would hardly call myself a expert. I run nothing but Kubuntu and a little BSD.

Basically he has a system very similar to mine. And Kubuntu always works right out of the box for me. other then having to turn noapic option on.

                      He has a AMD Althon 64 X2 3500+ with a Nvidia 7600 GS.

Not sure about the mobo and stuff it is a hand built rig.

I've been having him try the 32 bit kernel just cause I see very little performance increase with the 64 bit kernel and a whole bunch of issues. Perhaps I should have him try the 64 bit kernel.

Anyway I have him boot with both the "noapic" and acpi=off options on and it boots to the command line option.

The live disc will not boot to the desktop. And the text installer will install the system but again X will not start.

I'll see if I get him to post his Xorg.0.log. I have yet to see it myself yet I don't have physical access to his machine.

The list of "issues" with 64-bit is really a short one these days:

                          1. Java RE
                          2. some non-free music players, like the one at Rhapsody.com

Use Kilz flash plugin from Ubuntu Forum 64-bit, and flash works fine.

That's basically it. If he's not deep into Java programming, I'd encourage him to use the 64-bit OS --- one of these days it will actually outperform the others!

I'll have to try that myself. 64 bit was always a pain in my butt. So I just stuck with 32.

Thanks man, I'll let you know how it goes.

I dont know what I'm looking at to be honest for the most part.

There are 2 lines with errors. Just wondering if anyone could point something out. thanks
