What are the Linux equivalents of these Windows apps?

    Hi again,

I have my nice shiny new Kubuntu install and have managed to (mostly) beat Firefox into submission and get it working the way it did on my XP box...

Now I'm looking for Linux equivalents for my other Windows apps, namely:

1: Paintshop pro 7.04 (for photo manipulation and 2D bitmap drawing) - the GIMP is WAAAYY to bloated and too complex/photoshop-like!

    2: WinAMP 5 - such a nice MP3 player

3: Media Player Classic - THE best media player on windows...

    4: VirtualDub - such a great video editor/tinkerer

    5: DVDShrink and/or DVD Decryter

6: ffdshow - again, the best video/audio codec on Windows...

7: any VSTi synths for Linux (I think this may be a long-shot!)

Any pointers/suggestions greatly appreciated, as ever!

    Cheers,

    Mike.

try this, this one or here

    That should cover 1-5

for 6, ffdshow actually uses open source libraries that are already available to you, and is quite old actually
Look at this documentation page for some info, and links to what you need to install

    7?
    google
as a starting point brings up a few links, ZynAddSubFX is one that I see available in Adept
http://www.linux-vst.com/ might also be a place to start.
With this relatively specialized area, Ubuntu packages may be hard to come by, so you may end up learning to compile your own binaries, tho the energyXT2 from linux-vst site is a self-contained package, just extract the files and click the executable

Claydoh, your overload status is well-deserved!

      Many thanks for the pointer!

      Cheers,

      Mike.

As claydoh already gave you most of the info I will just give you a few my favorites.

          Paintshop->Krita (its in the repos)

audio management/editing/studio-> Ardour (also in the repos):

          I hope that helps
