    Ubuntu 2 Kubuntu

    Hi,
I was trying tonight to replace my Ubuntu Install with Kubuntu. However, after burning the iso to disk and running the bootstrap loader, I received a message the bootstrapper could not install certain packages, resulting in a failed install. I went back to Ubuntu for now, but what to switch. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

You don't have to burn anything if you've got an internet connection on the machine you want to run in kubuntu. Simply start synaptic, switch to sections, find KDE and install any and all of the things you want. I'd recomend kdebase, kdegames, kdeguidance, and khelpcenter as a good start. Before you know it though, you'll add a lot more if you like KDE.

    Welcome to the club!
    Al

Also...installing 'kubuntu-desktop' meta-package gives you everything a kubuntu CD will.
(I think this is the recommended method instead of installing individual KDE packages)

Of course then you'll have a system with both gnome and kde. And removing a desktop environment is not that straightforward. There are instructions on how to remove a desktop environment (if you need/want to)...search these forums and you should find them

If you wish to do a "clean" kubuntu installation (to save diskspace for example) you can do it with an existing ubuntu CD (and an internet connection) by doing a 'server' installation and then installing 'kubuntu-desktop'.

About your installation problems...it might be a faulty disk, or maybe the machine can't access the internet (it may need to download language packages from the repositories) or something else...hard to tell without all the information

It's not recommended by me. It'll give you the Kubuntu defaults, so if that's what you're looking for, do that. Otherwise, you can install kde-core and work from there.

Here are some instructions I wrote on removing Ubuntu's Gnome set of packages.
